Splitters take one 50-Ohm signal cable input and split it into two or more 50-Ohm signal.  There are a few types of splitters out there.  The main one I use is the passive, resistive 3-way splitter.  There are other splitters that use transformers that can also invert the signal, but these usually have a more limited bandwidth.

Passive, resistive 3-Way Splitter

Splits one input into two outputs with 6dB of attenuation (2X) on each of the outputs.  Consists of 3 identical resistors in a "Y" configuration where each end of the Y connects to a center conductor.  This is a totally symmetric device so that any connector could be the input.  The resistance value works out to be 16.7 Ohms in this case.
